about

My name is Adam Walton. I’m from Mold in north Wales. I love chords, melodies and writing songs inspired by the likes of The Kinks, Nick Drake and Elliott Smith.

The first song I ever wrote was called ‘Cloudburst’, back when I was 14 or 15. The title track of my new E.P isn’t that song; I just love the word and I remember being a kid in Nannerch, playing out in the fields and woods, and how a sudden rain shower - especially on an otherwise bright day - would cast everything in a strange light and mood. That’s what I wanted to capture with this song.

When I wrote ‘Cloudburst II’ I was listening to Beck’s album ‘Morning Phase’ a lot. That album has a really distinct atmosphere: something a little removed and observational that I liked, a faith that things would get better that has nothing to do with a god but everything to do with nature and time.

There is a philosophy to the recording of this song - and the rest of the album. I listen to a lot of new recordings that have been fixed - partially dehumanised - by the miracles of tuning plug-ins, multiple takes and editing. Although I think it’s valid and interesting to use the technology of your time to best capture your music, I also wanted something that sounded more human, flaws and all.

‘Aspartame’ is about accepting people even if they hold different views to you, and how fake news sites and corporations benefit from stirring us up, exaggerating the differences between folk who would otherwise get along with each other.

‘Rainy Sky Sunday’ is an old song I originally wrote for a Neil Crud acoustic session in 2016. I couldn’t sing it then, which was mortifying, but I love the chords and the melody, and - like ‘Cloudburst’ - it’s similarly obsessed with using weather as a hackneyed metaphor.

’27’ is an instrumental interlude. I love effects pedals, sampling and manipulating whatever I can capture or play to convey a mood that’s sympathetic to the songs it introduces. The forthcoming album - ‘Afal’ - is interspersed with many such interludes. I hope they’re interesting companion pieces.

When I released my previous single ‘Mary Sees UFO’s’ last April, the album pressing was due to arrive imminently. However interminable delays at the vinyl plant meant that the pressing didn’t arrive until mid-December. Then - upon closer inspection - there was a blemish in every copy of the vinyl that meant I had to wait even longer, while it was re-pressed.

The pressing has now arrived and is blemish free. I will release ‘Afal’ on Friday, 18th. April 2022.

‘Cloudburst II’ was recorded at Orange Sound Studios in Penmaenmawr by Russ Hayes (Kidsmoke, Campfire Social, Peaness). All other tracks were recorded at home by me.

The EP will be available via the usual download / streaming outlets from Friday, February 25th 2022.
